Some stimulating thoughts for today:

I heartily agree with the World Bank conference participants, that

there is " ...a need for research that is 'closer to the ground', in which researchers write about what they see rather than responding to other researchers' papers."

(p2 World Bank Policy and Research Bulletin, Oct-Dec 1997)

I think that this extends to economics in general, and even further to all fields of scientific endeavor. It is important to attempt to overcome the sometimes circular nature of the scientific method which when combined with the peer pressure of publication editorial techniques, can stifle innovation in the attempt to maintain links with what has been done before.

TRADABLES

As founding editor, I actually set up the series 'Working Papers in Econometrics and Applied Statistics' while I was in the Econometrics and Times Series section of the ABS, as regular outlet for the dissemination of our research, the aim being outside recognition, commentary and involvement by academics, peers and statistics users in the ongoing development of statistics and their use. I think that it achieves this aim quite well, facilitating the possibility of regular updates on current research. As you can see from the abstract for the Tradables working paper, a lot of research may not result in any other end-product.

Sea Fever

I must go down to the sea again to the lonely seas and the sky and all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by and the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking and a grey mist on the sea's face and a grey dawn breaking...

I must go down to the sea again for the call of the running tide is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied . And all i ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying and the flung spray and the blown spume and the seagulls crying...

I must go down to the sea again to the vagrant gypsy life to the gull's way and the whale's way where the winds like a whetted knife. And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow rover and a quiet sleep, and a sweet dream when the long trick's over.

.........John Masefield.

but in the city, or when there is less than 20 knots of wind, tennis can be fun in the sun,

when I can't do these I like to try golf,

skiing fulfils my speed/adrenaline urge once a year, when it's too cold too windsurf.

Going to the gym, running & swimming help me stay prepared for these.

'...Thinking is a creative exercise. It needs more time and space, less pressure... let your overworked mind do the thing you never allow it to do - to just idle, and you'll be surprised about how many good ideas you come up with when you think you're not thinking!'

all else

I became a lifesaving instructor in 1986,

I play the piano, and have played the violin, in both I did exams until 7th grade level while at school.

At various times I partake in a choir, I love singing.

I love opera, although some are better than others,

and live Sheakespeare is wonderful when it's well interpreted.

I take a lot of photos.

I would like to sail around the world on a yacht.

'people wonder how I do so much, I wonder how they do so little'

Have a look at my youngest sister Yoli(actually Yolande), who is also in London, doing migraine research at the Institute for Neorology, and her phd at UCL , and is the captain of the water polo team. Yoli Inc.

My other (slightly younger) sister Melisande is working for Fairfax Australia, the other newspaper group in Australia that tries to keep the magnates at bay.(Rupert Murdoch, Conrad Black and Kerry Packer) She is the only one of us working in the private sector at the moment. She is completing her Masters in Marketing at Sydney University, part-time in the evenings, and did her first degree (accounting) as a sandwich Bachelor of Business at UTS, while working as a cadet with Coopers & Lybrand. she specialised in Insolvency - a boom business in the early 90's. Being moved to audit, the prospect of 2 years evening study for a PY, and travel to the Nepal, working in the UK, & Canada meant that she made a big move towards publishing, away from accounting. At school she excelled, getting the top German mark in the state of NSW, while in the A hockey team, inter-school diving, swimming etc etc etc and Captain of Music.

Our mum is in Sydney, living in Manly and has recently started studying Catallan and writing our family history. A romantic at heart, experienced traveller, retired teacher, keen bush and beach walker, adventurer extraordinaire who always has too much energy, she always encourages us to go for gold! Soon she will 64, just like the Beatles song.

Our father, Harry, died suddenly of pancreatic cancer in August 1979, and my mother having lost the love of her life, has never remarried. Yet. Apparently thay are all too dull.

I grew up a 'simple country girl' in tropical Mackay, a sugar town with 5 mills, which is not far from Shute Harbour and all the beautiful Whitsunday islands. The lovely rainforest of Eungella in the Great Dividing Range separates the coast from the dry inland scrub where extensive cattle farming(about 2-5 to a square km) and open cast coal mining take place.
